Gethsemane

On this night almost 2000 years ago the Lord Jesus agonized in the Garden of Gethsemane, overwhelmed by the metaphorical “cup” He would drink to obtain the salvation of sinners like me. Perhaps no other event from His life (with the exception of His cry of abandonment, which His garden grief foreshadows) conveys the unspeakable cost of our salvation. God would be estranged from God, and the anticipation of that estrangement and of the imputed sin that would necessitate it was absolutely crushing to Christ. What a mystery!

I’ve thought on Christ’s garden prayer much, and I preached on it last February at BJU. This message may be an aid to you as you meditate anew on what Christ endured in your place and for your eternal joy.
