A Great Deal on an mp3 Player and 3 Sermons to Get You Started

Question: if you don’t yet have an mp3 player, why not??? Carrying sermons in my pocket has been one of the most spiritually rewarding practices of my Christian life. Over the summer months, I’ll listen to a couple sermons a week while I mow the lawn, 3-4 while I jog, and usually 1-2 more while I run errands in the car. Every week! That’s a lot of time to redeem by meditating on the Word. (Those of you who have a substantial commute to work should be repenting right about now. Mercy.)

Now, don’t say you can’t afford it. Not true. Tigerdirect.com is offering a 2 gig mp3 player for just $30–with no rebate! That’s unbelievable. I paid more than that 2 years ago for one with 1/8 the space. If you get it, and if you still have a car that has a tape deck, be sure to put this cassette adapter in the car, as well. It will allow you to play your mp3 player through your car stereo. For under $40, you have unlimited sermons–to go. So what are you waiting for???

Okay, here are 3 messages to get you started. They’re all excellent:

I’ve heard prominent theologians preach on the topic of justification, but I’ve never heard one do a better job than Dr. Michael Barrett did at an OBF Conference about a year and a half ago. I know that comparing preachers is ridiculous, but this message is superb. Thanks to Andy Rupert for making it available.

Mike Goldfuss has been recommending that I listen to a sermon entitled “Ten Shekels and a Shirt” by Paris Reidhead for quite some time. Well, I took it in the car with me this week (see the first paragraph of this post, then order the mp3 player and cassette). It’s powerful. Give it a listen. There will be a few things that have you scratching your head, but the overall theme and effect of the message is excellent. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it after you hear it.

Finally, I ran with Dr. Alan Cairns this evening, and he preached a message on Judas Iscariot. It is a powerful and insightful sermon, and Dr. Cairns’ gravity fits the message perfectly. You should hear it. We think too rarely of Judas’ betrayal and of the same tendencies in ourselves.

BTW, if you listen to these and would like to comment on them, please do so. I enjoy being able to discuss a message I’ve appreciated–it makes the appreciation and impact even greater. Also, there are a few other recommendations at MTC under the mp3 category.

Now, why haven’t you ordered the mp3 player yet?
