It’s a Big 10 World

Everybody else is just paying rent.

Troy Heisman

We’re just days away from “The Game”–the one everybody’s talking about, and perhaps the first of two. This year, “The Grandaddy of Them All” is at the Horseshoe, not the Rose Bowl. (Sorry, Keith.)

This game’s got it all:

  • No. 1 and No. 2.
  • Scarlet & gray and maize & blue.
  • Carmen Ohio, Script Ohio, Across the Field, the Skull Session and (yawn) The Victims.
  • 100,000+ Buckeye fans.
  • The best rivalry in all of sports (ESPN lists Ali-Frazier as the second best). Don’t believe me? It’s a resolution of the 108th Congress.
  • A can’t lose Heisman trophy candidate.

Sure, Michigan’s won more head-to-head games, but The Ohio State University’s got the same number of National Titles (7 each, though I should note that 4 of Michigan’s occurred prior to WWII), more All-Americans (125 to 73), and more Heismans (6 to 3)…not to mention 4 of the last 5 meetings.

How ’bout we make that 5 of the last 6. The only thing sweeter than winning another Big 10 title and ending the season unbeaten will be ruining the season of the school up north.

Priceless.

Predictions? Smack? Michigan jokes? Bring it on.

  1. See, this is the kind of talk that comes you have a state full of non-competitive teams in all other sports and the one constant roadblock to the national championship is coming to town.

    Sad, really sad.

  2. What’s the sorry Keith about? The Horseshoe is THE PLACE. I’m a proud OSU alum who, long long ago, had season tickets at the Horshoe and witnessed, first hand, the glories of Scarlet and Grey battling the team from the north.

  3. Sorry, Keith, but the first “Sorry, Keith” was a referece to Keith Jackson. I didn’t know you were an OSU allum or I would have been kinder in the past.

DMD, just be relieved that you’re not coming into this with the top seed. Seems like that hasn’t really worked well for your teams this year.

  4. Think about the irony of a Keith who is an OSU grad not recognizing the Keith who calls all of the Rose Bowl games and used the line “grand daddy of them all.”

I don’t think any MICHIGAN fan would have difficulty making that identification.

Chris, I have never been one to whine that our teams do well in the season and make it far in the playoffs, but don’t reach the final prize. It is still a lot of fun to watch winning teams and championship contenders. Of course, if I lived in a state that hangs its hockey hopes on the Blue Jackets and couldn’t even keep the old Barons in existence, I might feel as you do. And the Lions may be sad, but at least they didn’t flee to Baltimore. How bout those Cavs championship banners!

Another little tidbit–Uof M and OSU are the only teams to have won NCAA national championships in football, basketball, and baseball. I guess that makes hockey the deciding factor: U of M–9 Nat’l Championships; OSU–O. Oops. I think you may have done better at fencing than us.

  5. Hey, can’t a guy inject a little narcissitic irony once in a while? Go bucks.

  6. So are you guys already prepared for Sunday?

    tut tut

  7. Has anybody noticed that my comments on the Tetreau article were just long enough to move that hideous picture out of sight?

  8. All better now.

  9. Hi Chris, long time no hear. I like your blog. Your game comments are too fun, but I’ll always be a Detroiter at heart shouting GO BLUE down here in SEC USC Gamecock country, Ft Jackson, Columbia, SC.

  10. I’ve never really understood cheering for a team that uses a nut for its mascot! No wonder Woody Hayes seemed so angry. GO BLUE!

    A LLOYD CARR!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA . . .

Woody Hayes quote of the day: On why he went for two after a touchdown with a 34 point lead over Michigan in 1968

“Because I couldn’t go for three.”

  12. I’m having mixed emotions being a Fighting Irish fan. May the game tie with two big zero’s on the scoreboard. But I must admit, I’d rather see Ohio State than Michigan.

  13. Chris, I’m with you on this one, but it’s only because the Buckeyes are the lesser of two evils. My prediction — Ohio St 24, Michigan 14.

  14. Dave,

You’re right about Michigan’s inablity at fencing. They lost both times to the Buckeyes last year 19-8 and 24-3, while Ohio State won the national title in 2004 and was runner-up in 2005.

  16. Did you hear that the Ohio State University library burned to the ground? All five books in the library were completely destroyed…The football team is really upset by the fire; they hadn’t colored in two of the books yet!

  17. Wow. It would appear that the new editor of the OHIO Bible Fellowship’s publication has loyalty issues.

Funny thing is, you have supporting churches in both states. You may have to do the math and make your decision. :D

  18. Huh–talk about the pot calling the kettle black! ;-)

  19. Okay, Dan. You got me. On the other hand, I’m being disloyal to a losing team…

Perhaps this will help you make the transition. You can save it to your hardrive my right-clicking and…

A M******n football player was sitting at a table reading the newspaper. The headline read: “12 Brazilian Students Killed.” He shook his head at the sad news, then turned to the man sitting next to him and asked,

  20. How do you get a Michigan graduate off your front porch?

  21. So……..you’re admitting you’re a fair-weather fan? That if OSU had a losing season you’d root for the better team?

    ;-)

I do actually have some good news to report regarding the ol’ Buckeyes from the newswire: A Buckeye football player was almost killed today in a tragic horseback riding accident. He fell from the horse and was nearly trampled to death. Luckily, the manager of the Wal-Mart came out and unplugged the horse just in time.

    Go Blue!

  22. Bruce,

Since you are an Irish fan, I would understand you rooting for Ohio St against Michigan…it would make sense to be angry at the team that beat the living daylights out of you earlier this season…

Four OSU football players were stuck on an escalator for three hours.

  27. Afraid for the safety of its students, the University of Michigan is sending police officers to Saturday’s football game with Ohio State and giving out a cell-phone number that its fans can use for police “support,” officials said yesterday.

They also are advising Michigan students to: avoid High Street, carpool to the game in a vehicle that doesn’t have Michigan plates, keep the wraps on Michigan clothing until inside the stadium, stay in groups, stay low-key and don’t fight, even if harassed.

  29. I personally think Michigan will beat The Ohio State U. Then Michigan will be upset by Rutgers in the championship game :).

    Can’t wait for Saturday.

  30. Chris, I thought you were Univ. of Colo. fan? What’s this OSU business?

  31. Well, it’s like this: I’ve been in Ohio for almost 10 years. I’ve adopted the Buckeyes, Tribe and Cavs. I do still cheer for the Avs, though.

Now the Browns? Not gonna happen. Ever. Being a Broncos fan is just different than being a CU, Rockies or Nuggets fan.

If you’re not from Colorado, you just won’t understand. ;)
    _______

On another note, did anyone happen to see the punt return for a touchdown that Pitt put on WV last night? I happened to flip on ESPN, and it was amazing. Pitt’s #81 layed a block on two WV players. Best block I’ve seen in a long, long time…maybe ever. One of those that you watch again and again and just cover your eyes and say “OOOHHHHHH!!!!” each time. If you haven’t seen it, look for it on-line or something. Mercy.

    And go Buckeyes.

  32. What does the average Ohio State University student get on

  33. What are the three longest years of a Ohio
    State football player’s life?

    ?

    ?

    ?

    ?

    His freshman year.

  34. All of those jokes could refer to either team, but not this one.

  35. This is all very funny! But watch out for the Colorado Buffs next year.
Go BRONCOS – Beat the Chargers!

  36. So Andy, is that picture a representation of the “Type As” in the sports world? :0

  37. Well, I hesitate to enter into analysis since I’m still struggling to learn this new football alphabet. However…

It appears to me that the dictatorial older football fan/ teacher (OFT) must have influenced the other students to shun that poor young man who was simply taking a stand, albeit differently than the majority of the group would do it. (I note there is no plurality of teachers pictured.)

So, the fact he is persecuted unjustly by a judgmental and obviously autocratic group (that is just going along with what the “teach” says) makes the conclusion obvious– in my opinion. :)

  38. And before I get in trouble for diverting this thread from jokes and smack…

What did the OSU grad say to the Michigan grad?
    ?

    ?

    ?
    ?
“Welcome to McDonalds. May I take your order please?”

  39. Ken, your analysis of the picture–especially the obvious like of a plurality of teachers–had me laughing right out loud. Almost woke my kids up. :D

  40. A guy in a ba–I mean, restaurant–says to the guy next to him, “Want to hear a great Michigan joke?”

The guy next to him says, “Before you tell that joke, you should know something. I’m 6-foot-3, I weigh 235 pounds, and I’m a linebacker for the Wolverines. The guy sitting next to me is 6-2, 295, and he’s a Wolverine tackle. The guy next to him is 6-6, weighs 320, and he’s a Wolverine center. Now, do you still want to tell that joke?”

A: Call for another cement truck.

  42. A little boy and his mother were walking through a Michigan cemetery when they came upon a headstone that read: “Here lies a Michigan grad and a great football player.”

The little boy asked his mother…

  43. Nice try, Michigan.

  44. Ben is a Type A winner. Ouch.

  45. Well,

OSU did it — never had any doubts. It was THE game. And Chris, if finding out that I have a degree from OSU makes you wish you’d been nicer to me, how’s it make you feel to learn that I also have a degree from BJU?

  46. TOO COOL!

    GO BUCKS!!!!!

  47. Wow, Chris. I’m impressed that you haven’t jumped into the “Michigan didn’t deserve to play OSU again” argument! Thank you for showing restraint :)

    We’ll get you next year…
