God Is Good, and Mom’s Cancer Is Localized

Good news from Colorado! My mother (who was diagnosed with a cancer in her eye just over a week ago) met her with her oncologist today. Last week’s full-body scan, bone scan, and brain scan all showed no signs of cancer. I’m relieved and, frankly, surprised. It appears that the cancer in her eye is isolated and can be treated aggressively. In fact, she meets in a few hours to prep for radiation treatment.

I’ve been meditating on God’s unchanging character over the weekend. His goodness wasn’t dependent on the test results or anything else. It would have been as accurate to say “God Is Good, and Mom’s Cancer Is Widespread” as to say “God Is Good, and Mom’s Cancer Is Localized.” We too often adjust our view of God’s love based on our circumstances—a faithless thing. Still, I’m relieved and rejoicing in this special and undeserved kindness to my family.

For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations. (Psalm 100:5)

Thank you for your encouragement and prayers. Give thanks with us, and please continue praying.

By the way, though I’m praying for a full recovery from this, I’ll studiously avoid the very awkward and potentially blasphemous statement “God Is Good, and Mom Is Better” should He choose to heal her. :)
